In the heart of Prague, a capital city with the atmosphere of a friendly
town, medieval and Baroque buildings are part of the fabric of everyday
life. Staying at a small hotel between Wenceslaus Square and the Old Town,
you will be well located to explore on foot. On the first evening participants
will be welcomed by our resident member of staff, who will be on hand
during your stay.
On Friday morning there will be guided visits in the Castle
area, including St Vitus Cathedral, the rib-vaulted Vladislav
Hall and the Baroque Strahov Library. The afternoon
will be free (an opportunity to visit the nearby National Gallery in the
Sternberg Palace, the newly-opened Lobkowicz Palace, now with the magnificent
family art collection, or the new Baroque Museum in the Schwarzenberg
Palace). There will be an evening excursion to Nelahozeves, the Renaissance
castle of the Lobkowicz princes, where the splendid historic interiors
have been expertly re-arranged to convey the atmosphere and way of life
of this aristocratic home. Dinner will be at the castle restaurant.
On Saturday we have planned a guided walk across the romantic Charles
Bridge over the river Vltava to the Mala Strana,
or Lesser Town, with visits to the Wallenstein Palace and
the church of St Nicholas. On the way back to the hotel,
members may like to visit the Kampa Museum, the new Music Museum, the
Mucha Museum or the Cubist Museum in the ‘House of the Black Madonna’.
In the evening, subject to schedules, there will be an opera performance
at the nearby Estates Theatre, where Mozart conducted
the first night of ‘Don Giovanni’.
On Sunday morning, there will be a special visit to the
restored Obecni Dum, a jewel of Prague’s glorious
Art Nouveau period. This will be followed by a guided walk in the Old
Town to include the medieval art collection of the National Gallery
in the Gothic convent of St Agnes. A final lunch together is planned.
