Sir Roy Strong was Director
of the National Portrait Gallery 1967-73 and of the V&A,
1974-87. He is the author of numerous learned publications
on Elizabethan and Jacobean portraiture and the English
Renaissance, the earliest being ‘Portraits of Queen
Elizabeth I’ (1963). Sir Roy has been a regular contributor
to ‘Country Life’ since 1987 and is the author
of ‘The English Arcadia’, celebrating the centenary
of the magazine (Boxtree, 1996). Passionate about gardening,
Sir Roy is an authority on royal gardens and palaces. For
many years he lectured on our tours accompanied by his late
wife, the stage designer Julia Trevelyan Oman.
