graduate of Merton College, Oxford. An art historian, he
has lived in the Mediterranean area – Italy, Greece
and Turkey – for over 25 years. He was a consultant
to the Italian Ministry of Arts in the field of fresco restoration;
was Director of the Anglo-Italian Institute in Rome for
6 years; and has taught at the University of Rome. He lectures
widely on art and archaeology at museums and institutions
in Europe and the United States, and sits on the Board of
Editors of the Blue Guides series, contributing to several
of the new editions on Italy. He is currently writing an
entirely new Blue Guide to the archaeology of the Greek
Islands, due to appear in March 2009. He lives near Orvieto,
in Italy, and produces olive oil and red wine.
